Compression and gating
Effects reference
Dynamics effects respond to playing level. Adjust them while playing both quiet and strong notes. Threshold depends on the signal feeding the effect, so a setting that works with one guitar may need changing for another.
| Effect | Purpose and controls | Starting point |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor | Reduces level differences. Attack, Knee, Ratio, Release and Threshold determine when and how strongly it acts. | Use a gentle Ratio, then lower Threshold until strong notes are controlled without losing all their attack. |
| Expander | Increases the difference between quiet and loud signals. Attack, Knee, Ratio, Release and Threshold control the response. | Set Threshold just above the unwanted low-level sound and use a gentle Ratio to retain natural note endings. |
| Noise Gate | Attenuates the signal below Threshold. Attack, Hold and Decay shape opening and closing; Range sets attenuation. | Raise Threshold until idle noise is reduced, then lengthen Hold or Decay if sustained notes end abruptly. |
